WELCOME TO THE NEW SITE FOR THE STUDY OF THE BAKERSFIELD SOUND!

THE RESEARCH JOURNAL
WELCOME TO THE NEW SITE FOR THE STUDY OF THE BAKERSFIELD SOUND! The Bakersfield
sound was a genre of country music developed n the mid- to late 1950s in and around Bakersfield, California. Bakersfield country was a reaction against the slickly-produced, string orchestra-laden Nashville Sound, which was becoming popular in the late 1950s. Buck Owens and the Buckaroos and Merle Haggard and the Strangers are the most successful artists of the original Bakersfield sound era. Fender Telecaster "twang" with a driving beat!

Loved your pages. My husbands name was Eldoe Owens, no relation to Buck. However befor Buck was famous my husband sat in at the Blackboard with a lot of the guys. He also played at the Lucky Spot, Pumpkin Center and many of the places mentioned. At that time he had his own band that simply went by the name of Eldoe's band. The guys played at many of the clubs and also many PTA meetings and other community events. Once at the Lucky Spot, Bonnie Owens sat on his lap. I teased him a lot about this after she became well known. Eldoe played to compensate the family income(five children) and worked for the Kern County Land COmpany tending the canals and for Ferguson and Bosworth Oil Exploration. We lived in the Shafter area for 32 years. After moving here to Muldrow, Oklahoma, he played at Roger's Mountain Music and For Janice Richard's Country Rain Band. My mother took care of Cousin Herb Henson when he was in the San Juaquin Hospital. I have met and talked with Cousin Herb's son who also lives in this area. So, thanks for all the memories.
